A shed roundup from the 2322 Men's Shed at Woodberry

The committee have been discussing partnering with Newcastle City Council to address graffiti. Photos of all tagging for reporting and documentation purposes.

Chook run project – at Woodberry Primary School would need to house 10 chooks, with a 20 metre run along back fence of school. The school would like a trapdoor in the back of the chookshed so kids can collect eggs. The run could have an open mesh wire to discourage vermin and prey animals.

School nesting-box need to be closed on top, with possibly the run as well to have a wire top. 2 metres wide x 10 metres long. The school will pay for materials.

Tim Coller spoke on mentoring program with the Tenambit Primary School (B-men). Involve in a bike repair activity and teach kids minor bike repairs and maintenance.

Tim also spoke on the need for STOP signs to be constructed, these would need to be scaled to two-thirds the size of a normal stop sign, be painted red.

Steel shutters to be fitted to windows on the front of the Clubhouse, quote had been prepared. Requested that the existing boards be recycled to the Men’s Shed for materials.

Funding for the Mentoring Training at Metford TAFE has not been forthcoming, classes have been postponed until they have their funding.

Dust extractors, quote to purchase 2 single extractors. Need some kind of ducting system for a bigger extractor.

Looking into ex-government computers to update ageing machines.

Photocopier needs fixing.

Stead Cycles, they will donate their unwanted bikes.

Men’s Heart classes are capped at $8/class. If joined at Men’s Shed it would be reduced to $6/class. He has to pay for license through the Heart Foundation. Gym in Bero is now closed but classes can be held at the Clubhouse of a Monday, Wednesday or Friday. He explained that he couldn’t afford to hold the classes for nothing.

Plans to fence in the awning would need to be approved by NCC.

Application for the Crown Land adjacent to the Clubhouse.

Seniors Week appreciation

Today the office received a certificate of appreciation for the Men's Shed involvement in the launch of Seniors Week for Wyong Shire. This is much appreciated for the effor that the Cluster goes to to have interesting and informative displays at community events.

See the earlier post on the event a success for the event and for the promotion of sheds to older men and a strong recognition of the role in addressing social isolation among seniors in the Shire. These events are also an excellent networking opportunity.

Clients and carers attend these events, shed members, local services, politicians and sponsors. A genuine gathering of the community.

Suicide Risk Framework

I was apprehensive about that might be expected of me at a Suicide Prevention Workshop. However having attended the workshop last year, it was both interesting and gave those that attended the information that they need to respond if required. I recommend attending. It is a bit like having first aid skills, just gives you the confidence about what to say and do if put on the spot.

Wyong Mens Shed Inaugural Committee

Seven good men and two women turned up to kick off the Founding Committee of the Wyong Men's Shed. The group has elected a chairman to convene the meetings and other roles will be filled as required.

Congratulations to Michael Morgan who was elected as the Chairman of the Wyong Men's Shed.

Jodie and Colette from the Wyong Neighbourhood Centre have sourced Community Builders Parnterships funding for the Men's Shed to be constructed in the Old School in wyong. They are working strongly to progress the Development Application and move the shed forward. Now with an active, involved and keen group of men engaged the shed is moving ahead.

The group will meet again next week to progress plans, following the allocation of specific tasks within the group.

If you want to become involved,

NSW Men’s Shed Association - Special General Meeting

NSW Mens Shed Association
The current interim committee was asked to develop an election process based on regional representation instead of a Statewide election.  A procedure based on dividing the State into nine zones has been set up and information already sent to members.  However, before an election can be held based on regional zones, the Association’s Constitution has to be changed to allow for this type of election.

The changes to the constitution are attached as a “Schedule of Changes” and the committee is proposing that these changes be approved and lodged with the Dept of Fair Trading.  A copy of the modified constitution can be viewed using the following link:-
http://control.visionscape.com.au/page18962/NSWMSA-Constitution--March-2011.aspx
A copy can be sent by post upon request.

The Special General Meeting will be held at the Maitland Town Hall, High Street, Maitland, NSW 2320  on 14th April 2011 at 4 pm.  The following proposal will be put to the meeting for approval.

“It is proposed that the following “Schedule of Changes” be made to the current constitution to permit elections to be held on a regional basis.”

Voting on this proposal can be carried out:-
·  in person by the AMSA Registered Shed Contact member

·  by proxy where the AMSA Registered Shed Contact member has signed the attached Proxy form.

·  by post where the AMSA Registered Shed Contact member has signed the attached Voting form and posted it to the Secretary, NSWMSA, PO Box 68, Windale, NSW 2306 to arrive before 13 April 2011

·  by email where the AMSA Registered Shed Contact member has signed the attached Voting form, scanned it and e-mailed the form to nswmsa@mensshed.net  to arrive before 13th April 2011.

As this is a special resolution for it to be accepted it has to be passed by a majority of three quarters of the members voting.

It should be noted that the constitution states:- "No business other than that specified in the notice convening the General Meeting is to be transacted at the meeting."

The committee has worked hard to ensure that the State has a fully elected committee and it is important, therefore, that if your shed wishes to have regional representation then you should lodge your vote and support this change.

Regards  -  Ted Donnelly (Interim Secretary NSWMSA)

Mayor visit for Seniors Week

Seniors Week has been celebrated with three consecutive open days at the Bateau Bay Men's Shed.

Today, Wyong Shire Council Mayor, Doug Eaton took the opportunity to visit the Bateau Bay Men's Shed. He was welcomed by the shedders, well fed on sausage sandwiches, a popular lunch at Men's Shed everywhere.

Doug was given a full tour of the shed by President John Sharples and Secretary Kevin Armstrong. They recognised the role of ADSSI in establishing and supporting the Bateau Bay Men's Shed. They explained the role of the shed as a positive influence in men's lives and the focus on men's health.

Kevin and John were also keen to show the developing plans for the Community Garden and amenities planned to support this new project adjacent to the shed.

The Mayor was impressed with the workshop, the role that the shed plays in the community and the enthusiasm with which all the men had contributed to making the Bateau Bay Men's Shed an important community facility.

Doug said he was very comfortable in the workshop environment!!

Seniors Week 2011 launch

The Central Coast Men's Sheds were represented at the launch of Seniors Week at Wyong Shire Council.

The event showcased activities for seniors that included, mentoring, craft and art, Tai Chi and Line Dancing. Elvis was on show singing some fabulous songs while those that attended perused the displays by Plan-It-Youth, Toukley Senior Citizens and the Womens Health Centre.

Wyong Shire Mayor, Doug Eaton opened the Seniors Week and enjoyed the demonstrations on the morning. David Harris MP was even invited to the drumming circle at the close of the days activities.

The Advanced Alzheimers Activity Boards on display at the Men's Shed stall attracted a great deal of interest. Not just because of the craftsmanship from the men at Bateau Bay Mens Shed, but for their usefulness and community contribution. All part of the vision for Mens Sheds!!

Candidates for the upcoming state election were all invited to speak for 8 minutes to address a variety of questions at the  CCCC Meet the Pollies event at Erina Youth Centre. The issues mainly focussed on issues in the community services sector covering issues like transport and homelessness.

Hon. David Harris MP takes the podium

Constitution charges

The Central Coast Shed Cluster Inc have been informed that for an Incorporated association charges [currently $41 expected to increase 1 July] have been waved till 30 June 2011 for amending and registering changes.

This is important for all Men's Sheds operating as Incorporated Associations across the coast.

John Roberts, the Cluster Treasurer is currently upgrading the Constitution for the Cluster. It is important that individual Men's shed make an informed decision about amending their constitituion.

Any questions or clarification please feel free to contact the Kim Hopkins, Community Development Worker for initial support on this matter.
___________________________________
During the Cluster Committee meeting the question was raised regarding the processs for changing of the Constitution.

The attached information if provided for those unfamiliar with the processs. This is the process that the Central Coast Shed Cluster Inc will adopt according to the Act:.

Special resolutions

When is a special resolution required?

A special resolution is required for:
·         changing the associations name
·         changing the associations objects
·         changing the associations constitution
·         applying for registration by an unincorporated group
·         amalgamating with another registered association
·         an existing corporation seeking to register as an association
·         an existing registered association applying to transfer incorporation
·         voluntarily winding up or cancelling the registered association and distributing property.

The associations constitution may indicate other situations that require a special resolution.

How is a special resolution passed?

A special resolution is passed either:
·         at a meeting of the association
·         in a postal ballot.

For the special resolution to be passed at a meeting
·         members must receive 21 days notice before the meeting date. The notice should include the terms of the resolution and a statement that it is to be passed as a special resolution
·         a quorum of members must be present at the meeting
·         votes must be in person or by proxy, if allowed by the constitution
·         support from at least three-quarters of the votes cast is required.

The results of the vote can be announced by the chairperson of the meeting or entered into the minute book of the association.

If a postal ballot has been used, members must be notified of the results as soon as possible. For information on how to conduct a special resolution through a postal ballot, visit the Postal ballot page.

If an association cannot conduct a special resolution either at a meeting or by postal ballot the Director-General may direct the manner in which the special resolution may be passed by the association.

A quorum is the minimum number of members that are required for the meeting to proceed
