No dust as they open training room at The Entrance Men’s Shed

Bob Ihlein shows Wyong mayor Bob Graham and MP for The Entrance Chris Spence machinery in the workshop at the The Entrance Men’s Shed.

THE Entrance Men’s Shed celebrated a milestone recently with the official opening of its new training room and shed extension. The facility is a welcome addition for the group which meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am and 3pm and has 31 members.“It means we can eat our morning tea or lunch without the dust,” Shed president Bob Ihlein said.

“It also means the office is out of the dust and we can now use the telephone without the noise.”
The extension was built with various grants. Wyong Mayor Bob Graham and The Entrance State Liberal MP Chris Spence were guests at the official opening.

“We had various state government grants and the council which built the original shed really helped out with the necessary approvals,” Mr Ihlein said.

“Our treasurer Peter Whitehead was the driving force in getting the work done in council applications, finding contractors and overseeing construction which was no mean feat.”

Mr Spence said men’s sheds were fantastic.

Samaritans at Kincumber

FOR the members of Kincumber Men’s Shed there is no greater feeling than giving back to the community.

The ever-growing group of handy men are in fact so dedicated to doing their bit for others, they have opened the doors of the popular men’s shed to community groups, with the Samaritans regularly bringing along residents.

“The shed is open to members four days a week, but every Thursday for the past two years we have been opening it up to community groups and charities,” Kincumber Men’s Shed member Jim Newhouse said.

“The Samaritans participants come to the shed twice a month and they give us a hand with projects, like putting flat packs together and making tool boxes and little stools.”

Mr Newhouse said that while members get a kick out of teaching new skills, it’s also the perfect way for them to give something back.

“So far we only have two come along twice a month, but we would be happy to have more,” he said.

On Tuesday members held a special barbecue lunch for Samaritans participants who showcased a mural they made.

Kincumber 5th Birthday

THE first of many men’s sheds on the Central Coast began at Kincumber in 2006 and it is now celebrating five years of operation.

A small group of enthusiastic men gave their time and, in some cases, money so the Kincumber Men’s Shed could start operating.

These included Peter Jessop, Wally Morison, Joe Horner, Mike Clarke and Alan Sparks. Current vice president Bert Ward said it was a matter of gathering equipment from people who no longer used it.

“In recent years, companies and organisations such as the Davistown RSL, Kincumber Mitre 10, Bunnings Hardware and others have made generous donations of equipment and funds,” he said.
“Without their support, the shed could not purchase the material for toys and items for disabled or physically impaired groups.

“The shed has a number of people who attend in wheelchairs and on crutches and needs funding for facilities.”

Shed programs include the production of toys for organisations that help children. The men also make repairs at schools, hospitals, retirement villages and homes for the disabled.
